Self-contained, automated, general-purpose manufacturing does not exist today. A few groups, including MIT's Center for Bits and Atoms and the molecular manufacturing research community, are working to develop such systems.

This kind of manufacturing implies many things, including:

  • Manufacturing systems can be operated without significant labor.
  • Manufacturing capital can be doubled in weeks or even days using cheap resources.
