Grid: Second-order Technology

AI dangers
Amazingly fast computers plus immense advances in medical diagnostics imply that brain-simulation AI, and possibly other kinds, will rapidly follow MM development (if they don't precede it).
Opinions differ on the dangers inherent in AI. The Singularity Institute claims that almost any self-improving AI will be immensely dangerous.
Space access
Advances in avionics and materials, and possibly in drive technologies (which may advance rapidly due to inexpensive testing) should make space access relatively easy and inexpensive--at least, for anyone who's allowed to go. Non-proliferation regimes may require that space access be limited in order to avoid non-watchable bootstrap projects.
