In the next few decades, nanotechnology will produce wonders and perils that we have only begun to understand.

• Weapons will become far more powerful.
• Manufacturing will be automated, cheap, and fast.
• Medicine will leap forward.
• Computers will get a million times faster.
• Outer space will become accessible.
• Energy will move away from fossil fuels.

What does this mean?

To put it bluntly, no one knows what nanotechnology will lead to.

• Wars may become more devastating--and more likely.
• Economies and international trade may be disrupted.
• Medical ethics may be stretched to the limit.
• We may all be retired--or unemployed.
• Universal surveillance may make us safe--or oppressed beyond imagining.

Massive changes are coming.

If no one guides them, they will be random. If no one understands them, they cannot be guided wisely. If unwise policy prevails, we risk disaster.

This site exists to promote research into advanced nanotechnology.

This site was created by the [Center for Responsible Nanotechnology] as a place for researchers to meet, generate ideas, and collaborate online. In the discussion board, ideas can germinate and attract support. Reports can be produced and published in the articles: a mini-encyclopedia of nanotechnology, its problems, and their solutions.

Building a foundation for wise nanotechnology will not be easy. Chemists, political scientists, physicists, lawyers, engineers, economists, sociologists, medical doctors, environmentalists, and ethicists will need to work together to ask and answer the right questions. We will be adding a "Help wanted" feature to the site, so that people working on a project can request help from visitors with these skills. We will also have a way to link technologies, problems, analyses, and solutions, to keep track of which problems are most dire and least understood.
